June’s Athlete of the Month is Celeste Tellez. Celeste is that girl that you see that we all want to look like. She is tall and thin and very beautiful. Celeste came to us from another gym and she has been doing CrossFit for about a year and she has seen tremendous changes. When she started doing CrossFit she discovered something about herself that she didn’t really like… she was skinny fat! That means being skinny with no muscle tone – the thing that makes us look svelte and just plain HOT!
Mostly, Celeste has become much stronger. She has actually GAINED 13lbs since she started doing CrossFit, but it has all been muscle.
When she began she could barely lift the 15lb practice bar over her head. Now she is easily lifting 55-65 lbs and back squatting around 135lbs – more than she weighs! Celeste sets a goal for herself every month. Last month she wanted to get stronger in her back squat and get better at pull-ups. In May she wanted to learn to kip.
Celeste also has another goal for May – and this is what really made us choose her for athlete of the month. Her goal was to step outside of her comfort zone and try something new. And that is what this is all about! Each of us comes into a gym like this a little bit afraid. It’s new and it looks hard and scary. But we discover that we are capable of new amazing things and it makes us feel great. Then it overflows into the rest of our lives and we find ourselves trying new things there. When Celeste started CrossFit she was also starting a new job. She had one really big client lead that she tried to sell, but she was a little bit timid and didn’t get the sale. After doing CrossFit for a while she decided she was going to go for it one more time. She said she marched right in there, told them why they should give her a shot and sold them on the spot! When she got back to the office her boss remarked on how much she had changed and how confident she had become. She said a lot of it was due to the confidence she gained doing CrossFit.
Celeste also just signed up to do the Tough Mudder in October – another chance to try something new, step out of our comfort zones, conquer our fears and go for it!
