Today I am starting my first Whole Life Challenge. It is an 8 week online game where I get points for eating clean, exercising regularly, taking a supplement, following a lifestyle rule (this week’s is drinking a lot of water), and stretching. As you can imagine, since I own a gym I follow a lot of these pretty regularly without having to enter a competition. But we just finished our first holiday season back in Dallas and I, too, have put on some holiday pounds and I need to get back on track. There is nothing like a strict-ass diet competition to make you do that!
Usually I am very careful not to have junk food around the house to eat or to pick at. But with the holidays people have brought us cookies, chips, dips, and all kinds of other yummy tidbits that I don’t usually eat, but I might pick at every now and then. And my little cheats have been in the house in copious amounts, so cheating has been a bit too easy and too regular!
So today when I started this I thought it would be super easy to get back on track because I am usually pretty good… but my problem areas became visible very quickly. I came home from work, got my workout in, got my stretching in, took my supplements and drank my water (like I always do) and I came home to eat lunch. Lunch was 2 eggs scrambled with some greens and an apple. But sitting on the kitchen counter was a bag of tortilla chips – my favorite cheat. I thought I would have just one… but then I remembered I couldn’t have any because then I would lose my points. I was invited to a going away party tomorrow afternoon where they would be eating Mexican food and drinking beer and wine. More points. Then a birthday invitation to Times Ten Cellars… more points! Wow! It add up quickly – and when you aren’t paying close attention you can gain a lot of weight quickly.
So here we go… 8 weeks of strict. Why the challenge? Well, for me it’s more fun. And if I put it out there, I’m more likely to stick to it. And I can’t really ask you to do something I’m not willing to try myself. A challenge like this also points out all the little things you get wrong on a daily basis. Something else I like about this challenge is the baseline workout and the final workout – that way it’s easier to have a goal that isn’t about how you look – it’s about being stronger and able to do more… after all, we don’t care about being great at doing pushups, we care about being fit and healthy enough to do the things in life we want to do. I mean, if someone calls you tomorrow and invites you to go hiking, can you go? If someone calls you and invites you to go to Italy and walk around town and see the amazing sights, can you go? If your kids or grand kids want you to go outside and throw a ball, can you do it? And yes, we all want to fit into our skinny jeans, but as we age the skinny becomes less important and the healthy reigns supreme. We don’t want to get sick or get hurt – and healthy means you get sick and hurt a LOT less often. And with the support of friends I am much more likely to succeed! I hereby give you permission… nay, I beg of you to kick my touche if I don’t get my points regularly! And I will do the same for you – that’s what friends are for – to help you BE YOUR BEST YOU!
